The Humble Stone

In recent years therapists, have progressed from offering traditional body massage to incorporating, amongst other things, a variety of stones (crystal, basalt, river, ocean), to soothe aches and pains and relieve symptoms associated with the stress and tension the human body experiences coping with the fast paced world we live in. Throughout the ages stones have been used to create stone temples, pyramids and circles. The ancients heated warm stones in aromatic oils and placed them on the body to induce healing. During the Iron Age magnetic stones were used for acupuncture. The Japanese warmed stones and inserted them into a “kobi” around the waist to warm the stomach and aid digestion. Native Americans believed stones had a soul and referred to them as “stone people”. Celtic folklore believed that “holed” stones possessed healing qualities and if a person crawled through the hole in the stone they would be healed, and in oriental medicine hot stones are used in conjunction with the meridians to promote energy flow around the body. Throughout the ages stones have been used in sweat lodges, in saunas, as heaters, water bottles and to help reduce pain and spasm during childbirth. It is interesting to note that cold stones were also used way back then to slow bleeding after labour and the modern therapist uses cold stones and Cryoballs to alleviate redness associated with waxing, electrolysis and other therapies causing redness to the skin. Today, we use hot stones in massage to treat a wide range of conditions including fibromyalgia, and back, neck, shoulder and stomach pain, to promote circulation, release toxins from the body, improve cellular metabolism, alleviate aching joints and stiff muscles and to enhance total wellbeing. When used with care and loving intent, hot stones bring about a unique “fusion” of conventional bodywork and integrative therapies. Stones used in modern-day massage are divided into “worker stones” and “placement” stones. Worker stones become an extension of the therapist’s hands and are used to massage the body. Placement stones are laid on certain parts of the body, in specific layouts. Placement stones are used to activate and balance the energy centres within the body. Stones are often referred to as “magical” because the hot and cold techniques used during a massage always produce a therapeutic benefit for the client. Crystals and crystal grids Nature gives us many beautiful things but none as beautiful or precious as a crystal. Crystals come in a variety of geometric forms: triangles, squares, rectangles, hexagons, rhomboids and parallelograms. They are very beautiful in their natural or polished state. Like basalt and river stones, crystals and gemstones are also documented in history as healing tools. The use of crystal grids in therapeutic treatments is popular in many parts of the world. Crystal grids have been used to balance energy centres, help with relationship issues and bring peace, harmony and prosperity to one’s life. Reiki practitioners have been known to use crystals and crystal grids for healing and energetic balancing. Some therapists incorporate crystals into hot and cold stones therapy treatments. Amber is referred to as a crystal but it is actually a tree resin that has solidified and fossilised. Amber is said to draw disease from the body, alleviate stress and help the stomach, kidneys, bladder, liver and gallbladder. Aventurine helps to release anxiety and fear, stimulate muscle tissue and strengthen blood. Black Tourmaline absorbs negative electromagnetic emanations including cell phones and computers. Bloodstone oxygenates the blood stream, and strengthens the heart, spleen and bone marrow. It helps balance iron deficiencies, and reduces emotional and mental stress. Citrine is warming and energizing, and helps with self-esteem and self-confidence, depression, fear and phobias.
It also helps with digestion and constipation. Jasper strengthens the liver, gall bladder and bowel. Picasso stone stimulates the circulatory system, and helps carpel tunnel syndrome and toxicity. Selanite strengthens bones and teeth, and soothes the nerves. Sodalite aids the pancreas, balances the endocrine system, and strengthens metabolism and the lymphatic system. Crystals are undoubtedly efficient absorbers and transmitters of energy and wonderful natural tools for use in beauty or spa therapies. Shiva stone Shiva Lingam stones originate from a riverbed in the Narmada River in India.

No two stones are alike. Lingams are known as energy generators; they create balance, harmony and assist healing. They are also documented as being used in the healing of the planet through their harmonious qualities. When used in a massage treatment, clients experience tingling and heat, a rush of energy up and down the body, clarity of mind and very often, activation of the heart energy centre, resulting in self-acceptance, self-worth, happiness and contentment.
A Shiva Lingam stone is the perfect balance of yin and yang and combines both male and female energies. The upright egg shape represents masculine energy (knowledge) and the ‘yoni’ markings represent female energy (wisdom). Lingams help stimulate the flow of energy through the body. Possessing a Shiva stone is said to bring harmony and balance to clients, therapists, clinics and spas alike. Stone essences Energy fields surround living things (people) and non-living things (shells, stones and rocks). Energy fields are often referred to as life force energy (life force energy vibrates through all living and non-living things). When the flow of energy throughout the body is smooth and continuous, the body will remain in good health. When pain, trauma or stress occur the energy flow is disrupted which may lead to ill-health. Research shows that negative emotions can build up within our energy field. If negative emotions are not cleared, mental, physical or emotional imbalance may occur. The effects of negative energy can include distorted emotion, thinking and behaviour, lack of vitality, fatigue, disconnection from others, and panic attacks. Stones essences combined with therapeutic treatments bring relief from these imbalances by gently helping to break destructive patterns and bring imbalance back into balance. During the last 50 years obvious changes have occurred in human awareness with regards to health modalities. Because of this the use of stones and stone essences is widely respected as vibrational healing modalities that help clients to overcome stress, fear, anger, hate, resentment, isolation and dependence problems. They strengthen the physical body and improve health and total well-being. There is no doubt that stones have incredible healing energies and that they work on the premise that everything is vibration. More and more people are recognising them for their unique healing abilities. Mother Nature does indeed provide us with many “wonders” but none I believe, as simple and powerful as the humble stone!
